What to Wear for Fall Family Photos in San Antonio

San Antonio Family Photography

The most common question I get as a family photographer is: What do I wear?

Here’s my biggest secret: start with mom.

Let’s face it. Most of us mamas are pretty picky when it comes to how we look in photos, so my biggest tip is to find your outfit first.

Bianca is one of my returning clients, and I loved the dress she chose for this session. She loves color, so this dress what a beautiful indigo, and she was able to find shirts for the boys that complimented her. Notice they aren’t matching perfectly. That’s perfect!

Choose a color that goes well with your skin tone, eyes, and hair, or choose a pattern.

Especially for boy mamas, I love mom in a beautiful, fall pattern.

If you have little girls, you may want them in a patterned dress, so you, mama, can be in a solid color.

Once you’ve found your blouse or dress, use this as your color pallet.

I do not recommend everyone matching perfectly.

Sarah did great with her outfit choice! This A-line dress compliments her body shape well, and the color pops. Then her son’s striped shirt brings in baby brother’s and dad’s colors.

Dresses

I love recommending a dress for moms because it moves well in photos, stands out, and even hides the problem areas nicely haha.

Specifically, I love A-line dresses. This type of dress comes in on the tiniest part of your waist, right under the bust and flows out.

If you’re worried about your arms, you can always add a cardigan off the shoulder like I did in my family photos (at the top). I also have poses and tricks for the most flattering look.

Midi and maxi dresses are really in right now. Midi falls below the knee; maxi comes to the ankle.

Casual

If dresses aren’t your style or you just want a more casual look, go for some nice jeans and a great, fall top with some booties!

Once you have your outfit down, you can choose 1-2 colors that compliment you for everyone else.

Color pallets

If you still aren’t sure where to start, another tip is to start with a color pallet. I love finding these on Pinterest. You can search “Fall color pallet.”

Great fall colors include burgundy, navy, olive, and rust.
