I am truly so honored when I not only get to photograph my client’s maternity and newborn sessions, but then their baby’s 1st birthday session one year later!
That is seriously one of the best milestones because your baby is now 1 years old and can do so many things. It’s a reason to celebrate!
So I wanted to share a few ideas and options for 1st birthday and smash cake sessions.
Some mamas want to go to an indoor studio and get photos of just your baby with props that match their birthday theme. There are photographers who specialize in this type of photography. (I have a referral) Although this isn’t quite my niche, I do have some great options for you:
1. Family + 1st Birthday Session
One option is that you can schedule a full family session in San Antonio. This is a great way to get updated family photos while celebrating your little one’s big birthday!
That’s what we did for the Lester Family.
For this option, we will take family photos as usual — lots of candid, fun moments and some posed — and then, I dedicate 15-20 minutes to just your 1-year-old.
You can also bring a smash cake and any props.
2. Outdoor 1st Birthday Session
My expertise is natural, outdoor lighting. I love to find just the right spot for your little one backed by the beautiful sunlight and surrounded by nature.
I have some great San Antonio photography location options that you can choose from, and your baby will get to have lots of fun crawling around, exploring and playing.
(I recommend this options if your baby loves the outdoors.)
You can bring props and smash cake as well.
**This is not just limited to 1-year-olds. This is a great option for any age.
3. Indoor 1st Birthday Session
If you want photos indoors and you already are buying lots of props for your child’s birthday party, then I have a great option for you.
My friend, Josie, has a beautiful space at Party Hat Celebrations that she rents out for photo sessions and parties.
This indoor spot has beautiful light and a big blank, white wall. PLUS she can do your balloons for your photo session. She specializes is all things party, and her prices are so reasonable!

4. Indoor + Outdoor
If you want it all — outdoor family photos, photos outdoor of your little one, and indoor smash cake photos — we can do that too!
